Earley supplies winner of Anglia in Bloom

Wisbech in Bloom 2019 Old Market

Young plants from Earley Ornamentals have proven winners for Wisbech at this year’s Anglia in Bloom contest.

Communities across six counties including Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk took part in this year’s Anglia in Bloom, which is in its 22nd year of existence.

A whole range of Earley Ornamentals’ young plants were supplied to the Wisbech team who planted them up into baskets and barrier troughs. These were then kept in poly tunnels for a few weeks prior to being displayed in situ.

Local businesses and residents sponsored most of the baskets and the fantastic team of volunteers carried out the maintenance and watering.

Commenting on this year’s activity, Wisbech in Bloom secretary Penny Stocks said: “This year we also added a new project to our submission. Baskets and boxes with flowers were placed onto old bikes that were sited along the route of the North Sea Cycle Route, passing through Wisbech Town Centre - it worked so well!”

Creating a kaleidoscope of colour across the town, Wisbech picked up Best Overall Entry and Winner of the ‘Anglia In Bloom’ Trophy as well as the Best Large Town, and Best Business Improvement District (BID).

Earley Ornamentals Area Sales Executive, Mark Pratt, commented on the achievement:

“It’s a tough competition. Many different elements are judged, environmental quality, community involvement, biodiversity and the involvement of young people to name but a few, we’re so pleased Earley’s plants were a contributing factor to Wisbech’s success.

"It was also good to see there was personal achievement too for Brian Massingham as not only does he head-up Wisbech in Bloom but this year was also awarded the Mike Ames Award in recognition of long and voluntary service given by individuals to local and regional In Bloom communities, he really is a committed individual and a valued customer of Earley Ornamentals.”

As a result, Wisbech will attend the Britain in Bloom finals for the BID category, which is to be held in Belfast on 19 October 2018.

Film crews also visited the town and the various projects a number of times over the summer months to follow their progress in the lead up to the all-important judging day. It will be screened at some point in the spring when the BBC shows its Britain in Bloom series in the run up to the launch of next year's competition.
